All Road safety officers are constantly banging on about "The Three E's" Education, Enforcement and Engineering.

Below are the comments, (among others), that I made to a local authority Road Safety Committee, (in Rutland), who asked me for my views on the road safety of our county.....and probably wish that they never had asked!!!

Enforcement Speed cameras increased in number over 2004 and the death toll still increased nationally by 2%.

Engineering A loaded gun is a potential danger in the wrong hands. Safer vehicles are only as good as those who control them. A safe road is as safe as those who use them. (All road users.)

Education Education is by far the cheapest option in monetary terms and therefore the most cost effective in saving lives.

If taking an advanced driving course reduces the risk of death or serious injury by 30%, and getting a RoADA Gold can reduce this by up to 75%, why not just do it?

If the taxpayer was made publicly aware that each fatality cost £1.4 million, then multiply this by 3,500 deaths per annum giving a total of £4.9 billion; (I’ll be happy to avoid paying this money to the Chancellor of the Exchequer!!!) Add the cost of injury only traffic crashes and we get into silly money!

This is not even taking into account the greater cost - the death or maiming of a human being, the suffering their loved ones and the trauma to those others involved.

Why don't we take the obvious action and invest much more money in Road Safety Education? Just a little of the above costs could make a dramatic difference.
